Blending thinning is now available in “BRUTALIST”, a corroboration with Leen of SCHOREM. The BRUTALIST, realizing Leen’s “thoughts and dreams” is finally here! Expressing the flow and appearance of good old things with advanced craftsmanship. This is in Art Craft Collection series combines carving and handcraft, quality, function, and art.

The Mizutani Schorem Master BRUTALIST TH33 was developed in collaboration with Leen of Schorem, made specifically for barbers who value control, precision, and texture refinement. Its reverse blade design (25–30% cut ratio) pushes hair down rather than lifting it, producing a softer, more natural blend without harsh lines.

The 25–30% cut ratio reflects the natural variation that occurs depending on how the scissor meets the hair. A shallower or angled cut removes closer to 25%, while a more direct, perpendicular motion removes closer to 30%. This allows barbers to adjust the level of removal intuitively through technique — giving one tool the versatility to handle both subtle blending and efficient debulking.

With a volume control range of 30–50%, the BRUTALIST TH33 excels in refining fades, balancing heavy sections, or removing internal weight while preserving the overall shape.

• Material: EXTRAMARISE® is a proprietary heat treatment ideally suited for haircutting scissors that was developed by MIZUTANI based on long years of accumulated data and experience. The same steel material can have totally different performance depending on the heat treatment used. Therefore, to maximize the special qualities of the rare metals (cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium, etc.) we’ve added to our products to the greatest extent possible, and achieve the ideal metal for scissors, (*hardening, tempering, sub-zero processing) and other complete temperature management procedures are essential. To bring out the distinct characteristics of materials, and manufacture a blade with the ultimate strength required for haircutting scissors, we at MIZUTANI have implemented our own proprietary heat treatment using the ideal temperature for scissors: EXTRAMARISE® processing.
  
  
• Handle Design: OFFSET HANDLES for the Natural Hand Position. The offset handle is a new design that was made with ergonomics considered. The result of this design allows your hand to sit in a more natural grip around the handles. with your thumb in a relaxed position.
  
  
• Tension Adjustment: This model includes a Disk Driver, a compact flat-type screwdriver for UFO screws, which enables easy and precise tension adjustments.

New lineup of BRUTALIST with “Blending thinning”
The BRUTALIST blending thinning is born from the request of many BRUTALIST users,
including Leen himself, who wanted a thinning added.By cutting one-third of the ends of hair with the reverse-bladed thinning scissors that gives softer texture on hair. This also makes it easier for pomade to blend in and the hairstyle to last longer.

When I was asked by MIZUTANI, has a long history of manufacturing haircut scissors to design a new scissors with their always positive creative designing team.
I did not have to think my answer twice and accepted their offer straight away as you can imagine.
I love interior design, so as I was designing my new house interior in early 2020, heavily inspired by the period from 1920’s - 1970’s, mixing African art sculptures and design patterns with raw brutalist materials, I started to envision these brutalist inspired scissors.
Brutalism is not concerned with the material as such but rather the quality of the materials and seeing them for what they are, so a match made in heaven in my mind with MIZUTANI.
After meeting with the craftspeople and learning about the creation of the scissors by MIZUTANI the only challenge was my own impatience, having to wait to finally have them in my hands.
It was in this sculpture and handcrafting stage that I decided to blend quality and function with art and it truly came to life, why not hold something beautiful in your hands all day.
I had the opportunity to express myself through these scissors, it might not be for everybody but it reflects where I was at that moment and where I still am.
When you’re coming up with creative things, if you even get close to what you had envisioned in your mind’s eye, that’s great. What absolutely amazes me is that the scissors came out even better than I had envisioned. “Art Craft Collection”, A beautiful piece of quality art in your hands all day.
